St. Bernard State Park, Braithwaite, Louisiana

Updated: Jan 16

Two people smiling, stand under a "Katrina High Water" sign indoors. One points at the sign. Brick wall, window blinds, and an office setting.
St. Bernard State Park was flooded during Hurricane Katrina. A plaque on the wall shows the high water mark.

St. Bernard State Park is located in Braithwaite, Louisiana, about a 20-30 minute drive to downtown New Orleans.

We camped there in February 2024 as a home base for visiting New Orleans, and it was great for that.

To get to the campground, you drive through an oil refinery and residential areas. The campground is mostly quiet, but we heard trains during the night and early morning some days. The pads are are paved and narrow, with water and 30 amp electric hookups at the back. The sites are kind of close together--we didn't spend much time sitting outside, so that didn't bother us.

We found the bathhouse (there's only one) old and worn, but clean.

Seniors ages 62 and older are eligible for 50 percent off camping fees (use the discount code 62PLUS when booking. Military service members and first responders receive a discount of 15 percent off.

Visiting New Orleans--the French Quarter, Garden District, etc. is top priority. We spent three full days in the city, getting our fill of jazz music, gumbo, beignets, muffelletas and more.

If you are interested in history, check out Chalmette Battlefield and Chalmette National Cemetery, just a few minutes' drive from the campground. This is the site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans, and contains a reconstructed American rampart, an 1830s house, 100-foot-high Chalmette Monument, and outdoor exhibits for self-guided tours.
